City gets no opposition to property tax increase

Updated: Tuesday, September 10 2013, 06:00 PM CDT
For the first time in about a decade, Beaumont homeowners are facing a 7 percent tax increase.
City leaders met today to hold their last public hearing before they could vote on the increase. No citizens showed up to oppose the rate hike.
The extra funds would help pay for projects around town including road work on Magnolia.
The city's chief financial officer says the lack of opposition means the city is doing things the right way.
We checked rates for other cities around Texas of the same size such as Denton, and they have a tax rate 1 cent less than Beaumont's would be after the proposed increase.
Officials in Orange County are also proposing a tax hike.
The proposed increase is 7 percent more than the current tax rate residents in the county pay.
