Beaumont neighborhood reacts to credit union robbery

Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 10:30 PM CDT
BEAUMONT - by Lauren Huet

Police and FBI agents are taking a close look at some of the evidence a credit union robber left behind. He dropped some of the money when he ran away from the Safe Credit Union on 11th Street near Interstate-10.

"I didn't see the guy, but he ran by right here and apparently dropped some money," said Gene Arnold, pointing out the window of his office.

Gene Arnold owns Gene Arnold Enterprises. It's right next door to the credit union. He could look out his office window and see the trail of money the robber left behind.

"Right there just on the other side of my truck," said Arnold, "And the police discovered the money, and they brought in a dog, and handed the money to the dog, and then they took off behind that dog."

The robbery in this neighborhood isn't a shock to him.

"No, not the least bit surprised. It's happened before and it will probably happen again. That bank over there has been robbed probably two or three times," said Arnold.

He says crime is rampant in this neighborhood.

"I wish the city would do something. Something besides just running around and arresting people and do something drastic to this area. That's what they need to do," said Arnold.

Police say a man robbed the credit union just after 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The robber was caught on surveillance video, which shows a black man in a blue hoodie, with a baseball hat, and a mask on. Officers say he carried a folding knife. No one was injured.

Police and the canine unit followed the robber's scent down the road through an apartment complex. They also searched around nearby hotels and motels.

Jerry Vasquez works at the Travel Inn near the credit union. He welcomes the police presence in this neighborhood.

"I'm kind of glad the Beaumont PD has been around here a lot lately, cleaning up," said Vasquez. "There are a lot of kids around here and with everything going around, I try to keep mine on a leash. Keep them close by, because around here you just never know what's going on."

He's keeping his son close, until investigators catch the robber.

"I hope they get the guy. I really do, because people work hard for their money, and for somebody just to go and take it like that," said Vasquez. "I don't think it's fair for the people who worked for it and had their money in a secure place for somebody just to go and take it."

Taking money and leaving a trail for investigators to follow. Also, police say the stolen money had a dye pack inside.

If you have any information about the robbery, call Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS.
