BISD board delays vote on job cuts

Updated: Monday, June 9 2014, 09:14 PM CDT
BEAUMONT - The Beaumont school board is delaying a vote on more than 200 proposed job cuts to save millions of dollars.

The vote was six to one to delay a decision on the superintendent's recommendation for cutbacks. Only board member Woodrow Reece voted against a delay.

Trustees then spent much of the evening asking questions of Dr. Timothy Chargois to find out how various proposed cuts would impact the budget.

The decision to delay a vote met with approval from dozens of students who rallied outside the administration building this afternoon.

They held signs and received support from many of the passing drivers. The students say fine arts are critical to a well-rounded education and they oppose the suggested cuts in band instructors and other fine arts teachers.
