BISD Board fails to approve RIF

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 08:50 PM CDT
BEAUMONT - The Beaumont ISD board has failed to approve a Reduction in Force that would have eliminated roughly 100-200 positions, including those of many teachers, to help save millions of dollars.

Woodrow Reece voted in favor of the RIF, Mike Neil opposed it. Gwen Ambres, Janice Brassard, Zenobia Bush and Terry Williams abstained. Tom Neild was absent.

The conservator, Fred Shafer, told the board he could order trustees to approve the RIF and is in favor of it, saying without the reduction the district won't have the money to pay teachers.

Shafer told trustees by not passing the RIF, "you're not going to have enough money to pay teachers."

He also said, "I have serious concerns about not following through with the RIF at this time."

Shafer said, "the Conservator and the Texas Education Agency did not put you in this position. Therefore, I am not overriding this decision."

In other action tonight, the school board voted to close Austin Middle School and merge it with King Middle School. Students from Pathways and Paul Brown will move to the Austin campus. BISD Board fails to approve RIF
