Burglars hit South Park neighborhood

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 11:35 PM CDT
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton

Beaumont police officers have extra security in a South Park neighborhood after several calls of burglaries from area residents.

“I was concerned because I didn't think anyone would break in and they did. And whoever did was cut,” said Rufus North.

Someone tried to break into his home, but he says they didn’t take anything. Instead, the burglar left a trail of blood after receiving a cut from attempting to break the window.

A week earlier, Beaumont police officer Joe Ornelas says another home was targeted.

The burglar was able to take a number of items.

Other homeowners in the area, say their homes have also been hit.

“They cut my fence, pulled it back and removed my ATV,” said Kenneth Martin, a homeowner who lives down the street from North.

He says that happened at the end of May.

“It's getting to be ridiculous,” he said.

"We have put specialized officers to monitor that area a little closer due to some of the incidents that have occurred,” said Ornelas.

He’s also encouraging neighbors to create a neighborhood watch group, being the eyes and ears of the neighborhood.

“"The citizens are a great help to us because they know what's going on in their neighborhoods. If something doesn't belong there, report it, call it, call it in," said Ornelas.

He said he’s holding a meeting for community members to discuss recent events and form neighborhood watch groups on Thursday July 10 at 6 p.m. at Alice Keith Park.Burglars hit South Park neighborhood
