Dr. Chargois rescinds offer to resign

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 08:18 PM CDT

Dr. Timothy Chargois, superintendent of schools for the Beaumont Independent School District, has rescinded his offer to resign.  At tonight’s meeting of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Chargois removed from the agenda an action item to discuss a separation agreement between him and the school district.

The superintendent’s original intent was to begin negotiations with the seven-member school board at tonight’s meeting. He had suggested an agreement that would allow him to resign effective Oct. 31, 2014, so that he could finished the work he has started to bring the nearly 20,000-student school district into fiscal health.  However, directives from Austin, in effect, limited the trustees’ ability to negotiate Dr. Chargois’ departure from BISD as its chief executive officer.

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Michael Williams today directed the BISD Board of Trustees to not approve any severance package without the approval of Fred Shafer, TEA representative and conservator assigned to Beaumont ISD.Dr. Chargois rescinds offer to resign
