Fire destroys Jasper home

JASPER - By Mike Lout KJAS/Rayburn Broadcasting Company

It is still unknown what caused a fire that broke out shortly before 9:00 on Sunday evening, destroying a home at 902 Fred Street in Jasper.

The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department arrived at the scene to find flames coming from both the front and rear of the wood frame structure and there was nothing they could do to save the residence. Instead they were faced with preventing the fire from spreading to a nearby home.

Neighbors said the house, which was owned by Dent Mays, had been vacant for some time. However, Tyrone Teal of Jasper, said that he had just rented the home and had began move his clothing and other items in.

No one was home when the fire broke out and no injuries resulted from the incident.

Ironically, it was the second time in less than a year that Teal had lost a home to fire. In December of 2013, his home in the 1100 block of South Bowie Street was also destroyed. In that case, Jasper Fire Marshal Michael Collier said that arson was strongly suspected. However, no suspect was ever identified or arrested.

Collier said late Sunday that he would be conducting an investigation into the fire on Fred Street and that he believed the blaze began in the rear of the structure.
