Kountze City Councilman charged with felony theft

KOUNTZE - A Kountze city councilman is facing felony theft charges tonight.

A probable cause affidavit filed in Hardin County by the Texas Rangers..states 56 year old Ira Braneff confessed to pocketing more than $3,000 for a deal involving a cemetery headstone.

Braneff is expected to turn himself in to Hardin County authorities this weekend.

He has until tomorrow evening to turn himself in before authorities start looking for him.

The affidavit states Braneff sold a headstone for $3,125 to Deidra Lacy that she reportedly never received.
The headstone was for the grave of Lacy's child Keiron Edwards who died in a fatal crash in Hardin County back in January of this year.

Braneff is accused of pocketing the money that was meant for the business Big Thicket Memorials.

Braneff is a current councilman on the Kountze City Council and he is the head of the Texas Association of Sports Officials or TASO Beaumont chapter.

The felony theft charge carries with it a maximum state jail sentence of up to two years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.Kountze City Councilman charged with felony theft
