Students rally in support of BISD teachers outside Travis County Courthouse

Updated: Tuesday, June 17 2014, 12:03 PM CDT
AUSTIN - A group of students rallied Tuesday morning outside the Travis County Courthouse in advance of a Temporary Injunction hearing that could determine the fate of the Texas Education Agency's plan to take over the Beaumont ISD.

KBTV reporter Leslie Rangel and Chief Photographer Troy Harper are in Austin for the hearing.

The students held signs in support of teachers. The district plans to cut more than 200 jobs, including many teacher positions, to help make up for a multi-million dollar deficit.

The TEA is basing the takeover plan on what it calls vast financial mismanagement in BISD and a loss of public trust, among other things.

A Temporary Restraining Order that would have prevented the takeover has expired. The Education Commissioner plans to replace trustees with a board of managers and replace the superintendent, Dr. Timothy Chargois.

Monday the TEA confirmed the Education Commissioner's decision to lower the district's accreditation and elevate the monitor to conservator.Students rally in support of BISD teachers outside Travis County Courthouse
