Updated: Tuesday, August 26 2014, 06:49 PM CDT
BEAUMONT - by Jennifer Gordy

Beaumont Old Town resident Kim Huber
says , "The Oaks Historic District has a great neighborhood association
and we have a tight-knit group."

Huber lives in an area that has
recently seen its share of crime from burglaries to sexual assaults.

showed Huber a new smart phone app launched Monday by the Texas
Department of Public Safety.

Huber says, "I think it's a great idea. I'm
sure I'll upload it on my smart phone.  Why not utilize it? It's a
perfect thing to know who's around you and who your neighbors are and
what to watch out for."

The new DPS app allows the user instant
access to the state's sex offender registry.

The user clicks on 'near
me' and the app instantly pulls up registered sex offenders within a one
mile radius."

Trooper Stephanie Davis says you may also type in the
zip code of an area of interest. Davis says, "It not only gives you all
the sex offenders in that area, you also get to see an actual
photograph, their work history, location and things like that. So, I
think that's also a helpful part of the app."

The app includes the
state's ten most wanted criminals and human trafficking information.

The user is also able to report suspicious activity.

Davis says, "You
have that instant access of typing in a suspicious person, place,
something going on that goes directly into our database.  So, I think
all of that in combination makes it a really good app."  A new tool
welcomed by Huber.

Huber says, "We need ot be careful and know what's
going on around us and that's a good way to do it."Texas sex offender registry app available
