NAACP plans rally on behalf of Haynes; BISD comes up for discussion at council
BEAUMONT - by Justin Hinton
The Beaumont City Council meeting Tuesday took a turn, and at least for a few minutes, the Beaumont ISD was the subject of discussion.
A video we first showed you Monday is one reason the issue came up. The video was taken last Thursday by a surveillance camera outside the BISD boardroom. It shows the Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Communications, Jessie Haynes, appearing to block the door and preventing Jerry Jordan, who owns SET Investigates, from going back inside the room where BISD attorney Melody Chappell was holding a news conference. It's our understanding trustee Mike Neil decided to go back inside the boardroom to find out why Jordan was being kept out. Neil walks toward the door and it appears Haynes tries to prevent him from going inside. Neil ends up walking away and passing by Haynes, who makes contact with him.
BISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois placed Haynes on paid administrative leave, effective Monday, pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
Now, some citizens are calling on Beaumont City Council to get involved. One woman said there are three things she'd like to see council do with respect to BISD. But one city councilman and one BISD board member in attendance say the solution rests with the entire community rather than city council or board members alone.
"And never, ever, in my life, have I seen such a dysfunctional system as I do right now," said Sherrie Goth.
Goth sent two kids through BISD and she says something needs to change within the district. She'd like to see city council play a role, listing three things it can do. She wants council to take a closer look at what BISD board members are doing. In her words, "they are grossly misrepresenting the constituents of this city." She also wants council to be active in stepping up as a group and attending board meetings. Finally, she wants to make sure council understands how BISD's actions affect the City of Beaumont.
Councilman Audwin Samuel publicly addressed the comments. He says council is focused on what it can directly control. He says the solution lies with the community.
"It's not the actions in BISD, it's the actions in the city," Samuel said. "We are BISD. We are BISD. I'm a product of BISD. So it's not BISD, it's Beaumont, it's the citizens that make up BISD."
Late Tuesday afternoon, KFDM News received an email about what is described as a Beaumont NAACP rally Thursday on behalf of Jessie Haynes.

Attached are photos of the assault and below is an excerpt from Ms. Haynes concerning the Friday evening assault at her job:
When I woke up Thursday morning, I was excited about wrapping up some urgent projects at work and enjoying a restful three-day weekend. In no way did I think my work would include being assaulted by three men while standing in an area by myself. Certainly, I did not expect the verbal assault and bullying by Beaumont City Council Member Mike Getz in a tag team physical assault by Beaumont ISD Board Trustee Mike Neil and ex-Examiner slime reporter turned blogger Jerry Jordan! I did not expect I would spend several hours in an emergency room and find myself suffering from throbbing head, neck, shoulder, arm, back and ankle aches and a dangerous potential stroke level.
THE ASSAULT ( About 7 PM)
Mr. Reynolds came to me to say that Mrs. Chappell wanted to meet with members of the media and did not want Jerry Jordan or Mike Getz included. An officer and I went to stand near the double doors that closed off the public from Mrs. Chappells briefing.
Jerry Jordan and Mike Getz came in the area where we were standing and tried to enter. They were told they could not go in. They both ranted and raved and promised lawsuits and continued their comments about public facility and their right to go into the area where Mrs. Chappell was having a briefing with the people she had selected. The officer asked Mr. Jordan for his credentials, as he dug to find them, she went on the inside of the double doors, thus leaving me on the outside with Mr. Jordan and Mr. Getz. I asked Dr. Bonton, who was standing near the outside exit doors, if she would use her cellular phone record what was going on because I did not feel comfortable with things. As she pulled out her phone, Getz threateningly barked at her to stay out of this. As they continued to verbally assault and bully me, Dr. Bonton left the area. I assumed she left to get officers and/or inform the superintendent. As she was leaving the area, Mike Neil came rushing toward me, yelling why cant Jerry go in here! He did not say or indicate that he personally wanted to go in, he demanded I tell him why Jerry couldnt go in. As I was in mid sentence answering him, he said, To hell with you and Melody, you dont run anything around here. He proceeded to snatch my arm, grab me, strike me, manhandled me, tried to force me to the floor and throw me from in front of the door while hitting me in the back with the door. When he finished pulling and slinging me on one side, Jerry Jordan grabbed my other arm and tried to pull and sling me down toward the floor. As I regained my footing, officers came in from the board room and took over the situation. Even after he had assaulted me and thrown me from the front of the door, Mike Neil did not express an interest in going into the media briefing. AGAIN, AT NO TIME did he express he wanted to go inside the doors and at no time did he personally attempt to go inside the doors. In fact, after he opened the doors for City Councilman Getz and blogger Jordan, Mr. Neil left the area and returned to the board room area. As I was regrouping and leaving to tell the superintendent what happened, Mike Neil again came rushing toward the area where I was. Already shaken by his earlier physical attack on me, I shielded myself from him by raising my hand toward him while he was coming at me and said to him you better not ever put your hands on me again and I kept walking toward the board room. Neil and Jordan later returned to the scene of the crime and laughed and joshed about how they had assaulted me.
