Department of Public Safety holds ATV safety programs
It's a program that could save lives. The Texas Department of Public Safety is working to educate families about the potential dangers of all-terrain vehicles.
Fourteen-year-old Brandon McCain of Bon Wier died July 25, and 12-year-old Tory Foster of Newton County died five days later.
Both were riding ATVs. They were friends at Newton Junior High. Troopers say neither child was wearing a helmet.
DPS has joined forces with Four H and Texas A&M to bring home some of the risks of driving ATVs and ways to stay safe.
They'll present the safety program at schools in Newton and Kountze. Instructors will stress the importance of riding an ATV that's height and weight appropriate.
They also say wearing proper clothing, including pants and jackets made for ATV riders is imperative.
Parents in Kountze and Newton are invited to attend the training course at the schools.
