Port Arthur school district recognized for providing healthier lunches
Do you know what your child is eating for lunch?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture hopes it's a healthy meal.
It's National School Lunch Week.
The department is awarding nine elementary schools and a headstart campus in the Port Arthur Independent School District for healthy changes made to kids' menus as part of the healthier U.S. schools challenge.
The menu at Memorial High School reflects the changes.
It includes more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat options.
For many students, it's a sole source of nutrition -- one that doesn't cost a penny for breakfast or lunch.
The Port Arthur Independent School District is the only district in Southeast Texas recognized as part of the healthier U.S. schools challenge.
They will be formally recognized next October.
