How government shutdown affects Southeast Texans
The United States government is shut down. Many federal workers in Washington were sent home.
But the shutdown is also affecting Southeast Texans.
At the Jack Brooks Federal Building, business goes on as normal for now.
They're able to stay open for at least two more weeks thanks to reserve funds. If Congress doesn't reach a decisionby then, they'll have to start furloughs.
Some people with the U.S. district attorney's office are already on leave.
National parks are also being shut down. Here at home, some parts of Lake Sam Rayburn were closed.
But what can you do? You can still send out mail. Post offices remain open, and postal workers are excempt from the cuts.
The social security office stays open but with limited access, only addressing critical issues.
For some, the effects are small, but for others who were turned away from getting a social security card, the effects were heavy felt.
The social security office is still processing payments, but some may take a while because of limited employees.
