Babysitter arrested after 5-year-old boy shoots himself with her gun
Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff's Office have arrested the babysitter of 5-year-old John Read after he accidentally shot himself yesterday with the babysitter's gun.
Sheriff's deputies say the babysitter, 19-year-old Melissa Ringhardt, had been staying with Read's family for the last few months.
Ringhardt told investigators that she was carrying the gun because she didn't feel safe staying at the home alone.
Deputies say she left the gun on a coffee table in the living room yesterday and then went to a bedroom to take a nap.
She told investigators that when she woke up from her nap, she didn't see 5-year-old Read.
She says she found him in the living room dead.
A 6-month-old child also at the house was not harmed.
Ringhardt was charged with abandoning or endangering a child.
Bond has not yet been set for Ringhardt.
