Family questions investigation into teen's death
VIDOR- by Haley Bull
The family of a 14-year old girl killed when she walked into traffic is questioning the investigation.
"She was quiet, she was very bright. She was in all accelerated classes at school. She had a very kind heart," Phyllis Livingston said.
She's a grandmother looking for answers.
"Sierra was an honors student. She had no run away history," Livingston said. "I think this child was scared, I think this child was scared."
She wants answers in the death of her granddaughter, 14-year old Sierra Phillips
Livingston said the family knew something was wrong when Sierra didn't get off the bus Monday afternoon. She said the family reached out to police, posted a picture and got leads. But just a few hours later, she had to identify her granddaughter's body.
"When I saw her, that was when it confirmed it was, it was indeed a nightmare," Livingston said.
State troopers said Monday night, Phillips walked into traffic on the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge on Interstate 10 in Orange County.
family is questioning the investigation. Livingston said they believe something, or someone, may have caused the teen
to run into traffic.
"We've gathered enough information up that we believe there was some sort of foul play in this," Livingston said. She said there was no way her granddaughter would intentionally walk into traffic.
Livingston said the family thinks she left school with a friend, stopped at the friend's house, left in a vehicle with an older boy and went to the Old Spanish Trail.
"We think she left in a vehicle from there to Beaumont and something happened there. Sierra was walking back to Vidor. Sierra was trying to get home. She didn't have her phone with her," Livingston said. "Something rattled this child for her to even be on this interstate She was getting away from something, I don't know what."
While Livingston and her family are searching for answers, they wanted to say something to the woman who struck and killed Phillips.
"The family would like to reach out to the lady that was involved in the accident and her husband, send our deepest condolences to these people. They're gonna be affected the rest of their lives as well," Livingston said.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said it is an active crash investigation.
