PORT ARTHUR - by Scott Lawrence
Fox 4 has learned that a Port Arthur police officer shot and killed a woman investigators say came at the officers with a knife during a family disturbance call, according to information provided by Chief Mark Blanton.
The officer wasn't hurt.
Chief Blanton says two officers responded to a family disturbance call at about 8:30 a.m. in the 3800 block of 29th Street.
He told Fox 4 a female officer was forced to shoot a woman during the call. The woman died at the scene.
The officer wasn't hurt.
Investigators say the woman had a knife and refused to put it down. An officer fired a Taser at the woman, but they say it had no effect. According to police, she raised the knife and a female officer fired one shot that struck the woman in the arm. The same bullet struck her in the chest. The woman died at the scene. Both officers are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
Police say this isn't the first time they responded to a call at the home. They say they handled the woman in the past for minor criminal offenses and mental health issues. They believe the woman lived at the home with her boyfriend. Police will release her name after they notify relatives.
