Two flu-related deaths in Beaumont bring total to eight deaths
The number of flu-related deaths increased over the holidays.
The Beaumont health director tell us two more people died at Christus St. Elizabeth from the virus, bringing the total to eight deaths.
They range in age from 24 to 73 from Jefferson, Jasper and Hardin counties plus one from the San Antonio region.
It's why the Beaumont Health Department is urging people to get vaccinated.
There are about 700 doses of the flu shot left at the department.
One of the most effective ways to help reduce the virus' impact is to get vaccinated.
It's a precaution the director says is a common thread between all eight deaths.
"None of them had been vaccinated with the flu shot, said Sherry Ulmer. "And we do think that all of them had some type of underlying condition. They may have been not really sick, but they did have something that conrtibuted to them not being able to fight off this virus."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people 6 months and older get a flu shot each flu season.
