Icy conditions shut down roads, bridges
In icy conditions, bridges and overpasses are two of the most dangerous places to drive.
Many of the roads and bridges including parts of I-10 were shut down causing back-ups and delays across the area.
Added to those delays were the back-ups from wrecks.
When wrecks weren't a problem, it was the ice on bridges that made it difficult for drivers to navigate -- None more so than the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge at I-10.
DPS troopers say they weren't expecting the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge at I-10 to ice over, but many drivers found it that way when they tried to cross.
One 18-wheeler got stuck, which caused delays for people heading that way.
Throughout the day, DPS troopers closed the bridge intermittently leaving many drivers stranded or looking for other methods to avoid that area.
Some said they were stuck in traffic for four hours and still hadn't made it across.
Others tried to take the service road, but troopers blocked it off to make room for a de-icing truck.
That truck never made it.
A representative with TxDot says the agency couldn't risk losing a de-icing truck when it needed to be in a number of other locations.
And keep in mind, we're going to be facing some of the same conditions tonight and early tomorrow, so any water that's still left on the roads will freeze.
