Man arrested while warning drivers of speed trap
FRISCO, Texas (AP) -- A North Texas man has made an initial court appearance after being arrested for holding a sign warning drivers about police targeting speeders.
Ron Martin entered a plea Wednesday of not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of violating a sign ordinance.
Martin in October was holding a sign that read "Police Ahead" while standing in the median of a busy avenue in the Dallas suburb of Frisco.
Frisco's sign ordinance says a person holding a sign must be on private property; Martin was standing on a public median. But he contends the law regulates business signs and doesn't apply to him.
He told WFAA-TV in Dallas that police violated his free speech rights. Martin says his intention was only to urge motorists to drive more slowly.
