Two PA elementary students hit by car while walking to school
PORT ARTHUR - Two Port Arthur elementary school students walking to school were accidentally struck and injured by a driver who was traveling the wrong way on a one-way street Thursday morning and told officers the sun was in her eyes, according to information provided to Fox 4 by PAISD Superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie and Port Arthur Police.
Dr. Porterie told us the two girls were walking to Lincoln Elementary when they were struck at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday by a car in the 1300 block of Freeman Avenue near 12th Street, in front of Washington Elementary.
Port Arthur police say the children were crossing the road when the driver of a SUV struck them. Police say the driver was traveling the wrong on a one-way street and told officers the sun was in her eyes. Police say they ticketed the driver for several offenses.
Police say one girl was taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. The second girl was taken to Christus Hospital St. Mary. Police say their injuries aren't life threatening.
The superintendent didn't know their conditions. He said there's no sidewalk in the area where the girls were struck.
Dr. Porterie told us this is the first time students have been involved in an auto-pedestrian accident in his tenure with the district.
