Port Arthur man injured in New Year's Eve celebration
Port Arthur police say firing a gun into the air or ground is a common but illegal way for people to celebrate.
This morning, officers say a Port Arthur man shot himself in the ankle while firing several rounds into the ground of his front yard.
Police spoke with the man at a Port Arthur hospital emergency room and say he appeared intoxicated.
Police didn't arrest the man or file charges. Police say firing a gun into the ground is a misdemeanor, while firing into the air could be considered a felony depending on the number of people around.
It is a felony to shoot a gun where someone could be standing. Falling bullets have injured and even killed people.
