Howard steps down from tax assessor-collector position
An elected official who made history in Jefferson County is stepping down before his term ends.
Shane Howard says he'll step down as tax assessor-collector effective February 4.
Howard tells us he has accepted a position with a Beaumont company, and he's calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The job will require him to move out of the area for a period of time.
He is the first republican elected to county-wide office in Jefferson County in more than a century.
Howard has served as tax assessor-collector a little more than three years.
His term isn't scheduled to expire until the end of 2016.
County commissioners will have to appoint someone to fill his unexpired term.
