Statistics show decrease in local violent crime
2013 crime statistics for the city of Beaumont are now complete.
Last night, we told you crime was up 1 percent from the previous year, but that only took into consideration crime taking place in January through November.
We now have the December numbers, and overall violent crimes have gone down the same margin... 1 percent.
There were four more murders in 2013 than 2012, 17 fewer rapes, 10 more robberies and 15 fewer aggravated assaults, leading to 18 fewer violent crimes in 2013 than in the previous year.
Chief Jimmy Singletary also outlined his plans for 2014.
He said he wants to keep the crime rate down and continuing improving the clearance rate.
He also said he wants to improve community-based programs and hire more minorities.
In the past two years, the chief says the department has hired 51 people.
